It did not happen in a day,
first build the trust, to then betray,
sheep like people, like shiny things,
like dangling carrots, four carat rings
or perhaps, a sport to jail mus- lims
and quick they came, the baying hordes,
trampling all discordant chords,
they sang en masse their songs of praise,
to the saviour of their race, their face,
we’ll show the ‘others’ their rightful place
and one by one, the towers tumbled,
and people, silent, lest tummies rumbled,
our daily bread would be at stake,
make no protest, make no mistake,
our conscience we must now forsake
and judges then were little pawns
and mighty cops, submissive fawns,
and business leaders down on their knees,
each one more eager to beg, to please
and nod their yes-es, while he decrees
and since they all are bought and sold,
some with power and some with gold,
they only need the thing they fear,
the thing they’re most afraid to hear,
a voice that sings unafraid and clear
and so they come, with all their might,
they count on wealth, they count on fright,
they only know a business deal,
and money that makes the mighty keel,
they whistle and like dogs they heel
but the one they seek they cannot buy,
tho' they may grasp and they may try
you cannot get him with crooked smarts,
your journey ends from where he starts,
he lives in a million blazing hearts
Ravish Kumar, an ordinary man,
an ordinary life, he does what he can,
he speaks of truth, with love, with care
he brings the stories, he’ll speak, he’ll dare,
a man of honour, beyond compare
and such is life, all light and shade,
in the darkest times, there will be grace,
there will be one, who won’t salute,
who won’t stand up, or pay tribute,
a man who marches to a different beat,
he will not fight, nor will compete,
unmoved by glory, in defeat unchanged
his sacred quest that has not waned,
he needs no power, he needs no pelf,
he answers to one, his inner self,
unfettered, his song, he can now sing,
oh look! The bird is on the wing.
